About CEDHA
 

Background Information

The Centre for Educational Development in Health, Arusha (CEDHA) is a professional institute under the Directorate of Human Resources Development of Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in the United Republic of Tanzania. CEDHA is a semi-autonomous institution established in 1983. The aim of CEDHA is to strengthen and support the health care system through training of human resources for health in health personnel education, health services management and continuous professional development. The centre is fully registered by the National Council for Technical Education (NACTE).

Location

CEDHA is located in Sekei Ward, Sanawari area, on Block 3 Plot no.105 Arusha Municipality, in the Northern circuit of Tanzania. It is about 250 metres from the junction of Moshi – Arusha – Nairobi Road and East African Road. CEDHA is about 500 metres from Arusha International Conference Centre. It has an area of 24,347 sq. metres and is fenced. It has a certificate of occupancy number 21209.  It commands a magnificent view of Mount Meru, the second highest mountain in Tanzania.

To facilitate quality health service delivery through provision of quality training, conducting operational research, production and provision of health learning materials, and technical support in health related fields; using competent staff and appropriate resources available.

 

Core functions of CEDHA

The core functions of CEDHA are Training of teachers of health care workers and district health managers as well as conducting Continuous Profession Development (CPD) courses for health care workers in the Northern Zone. These functions are realized through the following training programmes.

·        Health Personnel Education

This is a one year course leading to an award of Ordinary Diploma in Health Personnel education. CEDHA is the only institution in Tanzania offering this course. The course has attracted participants from various training institutions in Tanzania as well as from other African countries, such as Uganda, Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Swaziland, Ethiopia and Botswana. The curriculum for this Programme is modularized and semesterized.

·        Health Management

The course aims at building capacity of health workers from public and private sectors with managerial skills. The curriculum for this Programme is modularized and semesterized.The duration of the course is three years conducted as distance learning.

·        Short courses Programme

CEDHA serves as the Northern Zone Health Resource Centre (ZHRC) catering for four regions (Manyara, Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Tanga), 29 districts and 30 Health Training Institutions (HTIs)

As a centre for continuing education; demand-driven short courses lasting for 1 - 6 weeks are periodically conducted. Such courses include teaching methodology, health systems research, health management and planning, primary health care, management of HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases, community-based health care and reproductive and child health.

Other tasks as a ZHRC are:

  • Determine/assess continuing education needs for health workers/service providers in their respective areas or zones.

  • Mobilise training resources for implementation of Continuing Education activities in the zone.

  • Link up and provide technical support to Regions/Districts in the zone with regard to Continuing Education activities.

  • Link up with Pre-service Training institutions and provide support in quality improvement

  • Disseminate up-to-date information regarding changes in, for example technology, epidemiology, new management approaches, etc., for improved performance of health workers in the zone.

  •  Develop and distribute simple, affordable and relevant HLM for updating information, e.g. pamphlets, booklets, as well as provide support in establishing mini-resource centres.

Future Training programme

In future, CEDHA envisages establishing two Master programmes in collaboration with Tumaini University, KCM-College. These are Master of Science in Health Personnel Education and Master of Science in Health Management Planning and Financing.

 Cedha management

For management purposes CEDHA is headed by the Principal who is assisted by the Vice Principal and an Administrator. Also, there are five departments namely:

  • Health Personnel Education
  • Health Management Studies
  • Administration
  • Health Learning Materials
  • Public Health

 Each department has its head.
