DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH
MANAGEMENT STUDIES
1. OVERVIEW
The department of Health
Management Studies is one of the CEDHA departments. The
department is responsible for strengthening management of
the health system, health organizations and health
programmes through training programmes, consultancy
and research. The Department has been providing
training and consultancy to Ministry of Health and Social
Welfare, local governments, Faith based organizations. Since
2006, the department has been involved in scaling-up of
TEHIP Tools in Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Tanga and Manyara.
Since the introduction of health sector reforms in
Tanzania, The Department has also been extensively involved
in strengthening of council (district), regional and
hospital management teams.
2. STRENGTHENING OF HEALTH
SYSTEM TRAINING PROGRAMMES
The department provides health management and
planning trainings to private and public
institutions/organizations in Tanzania. These trainings are
aimed at enhancing the management competencies of current
and future health managers working at various levels of the
health system in Tanzania and other eastern African
countries as members of health management and planning team
at programme, organizational, council, and regional levels.
There two main types of trainings offered by the
departments: short and long
courses
2.1 SHORT COURSES
These are health management
and planning courses intended to meet specific needs of
skills/competencies of an individual, team and organization
for improved managerial performance. The department offer
two types of trainings under short courses categories:
predesigned and tailor-made. Predesigned short courses are
courses designed by the department to meet general needs of
our clients. Tailor-made courses are courses designed by the
department (after consulting the client) to respond to an
identified management team or organizational needs

2.2. LONG COURSES
In additional to teaching
health management and planning in Health Personnel Education
course, the Department also offer health management course
at diploma level. The general aim of this course is prepare
competent health managers to manage programmes (HIV/AIDS
programme) organization (e.g. hospital) and health system
(e.g. council or regional level of health system). In the
near future, CEDHA will, in collaboration with KCM- College
and Nuffield Centre for International Health and
Development, start a new programme in Health Management,
Planning and Financing™. The new programme will prepare
competent health managers with advanced skills in managing
health programme, organization and health system.

4. CONSULTANCY AND RESEARCH
The department provide
consultancy in health management and planning areas:
monitoring and evaluation of health programmes, planning,
quality improvement, and human resources. In collaboration
with Public health department, with conduct research in the
areas mentioned above.
